The Red Castle (Assaraya al-Hamra)
The Red castle, situated on the outskirts of the Old City in
Tripoli, will definitely be a highlight of any visit to the capital
city. The Assaraya al-Hamra is made up of a number of courtyards.
The complex is a central part of Tripoli's skyline and contains a
number of Ottoman style fountains and statues as well as the
National Museum (Jamahiriya Museum) where you can view the
Volkswagen Beetle once driven by Gadaffi. Other pieces in the
museum include a number of artefacts from the Roman and Greek
occupation as well as pieces from Libya's UNESCO World Heritage
Sites of Sabratha and Leptis Magna. The castle also houses Libya's
Department of Archaeology.
