Welcome to Mahebourg

The well-planned town centre of Mahebourg shows its heritage as a French and Dutch colony. The sleepy coastal town is a centre of local trade and is a popular tourist destination in Mauritius, despite its rather run-down facade. The town boasts a number of hotels and other accommodation, along with some good restaurants, a casino, and a Handicraft Museum that is among the best places to find a souvenir in Mauritius. Popular activities in Mahebourg include sailing, golf, scuba diving, and bicycling. Mahebourg is not known for its beaches, though there are excellent beaches nearby in Blue Bay.

English is the official language of Mauritius, but the most widely used is French and the local dialect, Creole. Hindi, Urdu and Chinese are also spoken.

The currency of Mauritius is the Mauritian Rupee (MUR), which is divided into 100 cents. Travellers cheques and foreign currency can be exchanged at banks, bureaux de change and larger hotels. Travellers cheques usually exchange at a better rate than cash. ATMs are widely available in most towns and hotels, restaurants and large retailers accept major credit cards.
