Airport Hotels

The Bengaluru Hilton Hotel is within walking distance of the terminal.

Airport Taxis

There is a designated taxi area outside the Arrivals hall, where official operators Meru Cabs, Easy Cabs and Karnataka Taxi are based. Taxis are metered. Expect to pay around Rs. 700 to get to downtown Bengaluru from the airport.

Car Parking

Free parking is available for drop-offs and pick-ups. It is limited to 10 minutes and is located in P4. Short-term parking is available in P3, P4 and P5. Rates range from INR 60 for the first two hours in P2 and P3 to Rs. 80 for 30 minutes in P5. P1 caters for long-term parking. Rates start at INR 60 for four hours, INR 300 for the first day and INR 200 for each additional day thereafter. Monthly passes are also available for each parking lot.

Car Rental

Driving on the often-chaotic roads of India is not recommended and it is better to rent a car with a driver who knows the roads and the rules of the road. Rental operators are located in the arrivals part of the airport. Operators at the airport include Akbar Travels, Carzonet and Hertz.

City Transfers

Train: A high-speed rail link between the airport and the city has been planned for the airport, but unfortunately it is not yet in operation.

Taxis: The official airport taxis are operated by EasyCabs, Karnataka Taxi and Meru Cabs. The 40km (25 mile) drive into central Bangalore can take anything from 30 minutes to two hours depending on traffic. Taxis charge a Rs.60 flag fee, Rs.15 per kilometre and Rs.10/15 minutes waiting charge.

Bus: There is no public bus service between the airport and central Bangalore yet, but the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) does offer a shuttle service called 'VayuVajra'. The most current BMTC fares, routes and schedules are displayed in the arrivals hall just before the exit.

Departure Tax

All outbound passengers are charged a User Development Fee (UDF) of INR 970.09 (for international flights), and INR 235.72 (for domestic flights).

Facilities

Money and communications: ATMs and currency exchange facilities are located on the arrivals and departures floors.

Luggage: The information desk at the airport deal with items lost and found within the terminal building. Porters are available for hire. Porter fees usually start at INR 70 for three bags and an additional INR 25 per bag thereafter. Some porters will accept INR 250 to transport bags for the whole family.

Conference and business: Airline lounges have business facilities and Internet access. The airport itself does not have a conference facility yet. Hotels with conference facilities located within 10km (6 miles) of the airport include Clarks Exotica Hotel and the Royal Orchard Resort & Convention Centre. Other facilities: A pharmacy and clinic are located on site. Passengers travelling with infants can also make use of the baby care rooms. Disabled passengers are well catered for at the airport.

WiFi: Free wi-fi is available throughout the airport.

Information: Information help desks are situated on the arrivals floor next to gate five, opposite Baskin Robbins and on the departures floor behind Café Coffee Day. Staff members speak English and some information brochures about Bengaluru are available.

Shopping: Bengaluru International Airport has a tax and duty free shop selling products such as alcohol, perfume, tobacco, cigarettes and cosmetics. Other shops at the airport include an electronics shop, Shoppers Stop (a popular Indian department store), and more stores selling books, magazines, music and accessories.

Food and Drink: The range of eating options at the airport is limited. Time Out Bar, and Game Kebabs & Beer are the only bars available at the airport. There are a couple of coffee bars including Illy and the Indian favourite known as Café Coffee Day. Other options include an Indian restaurant, a Subway, Baskin Robbins, and a Pizza Hut. Restaurants and cafes are located in the public section as well as in the domestic and international departures halls. Passengers wanting the real taste of India can nip out to the street stalls located near the taxi stands at the airport.

Language

Although English is generally used for official and business purposes, Hindi is the official language and is spoken by about 40 percent of the population. Urdu is the language common with the Muslim demographic. India has a total of 22 official languages

Money

The currency is the Indian Rupee (INR), which is divided into 100 paise (singular paisa). Major currencies can be changed at banks, and authorised bureaux de changes. It is impossible to obtain rupees outside India, but no matter what time you arrive in India there will be an exchange office open at the airport. It is illegal to exchange money through the black market and it is advisable to refuse torn notes, as no one will accept them apart from the National Bank. It is best to change money into small denominations. Travellers cheques and major credit cards are widely accepted, particularly in tourist orientated establishments. ATMs are not generally available.
