Veligandu Huraa and Dhigufinolhu

A 35-minute boat ride south of Malé airport are the neighbouring islands of Veligandu Huraa (Palm Tree Island) and Dhigufinolhu, connected by a causeway over a lagoon. Dhigufinolhu is the larger and louder of the two, offering a greater selection of holiday entertainment and accommodation. Veligandu Huraa and Dhigufinolhu are also connected by wooden bridges to Bodu Huraa. Guests on either of the three tropical islands share holiday amenities including a PADI-certified dive centre, Ayurvedic spa, a variety of restaurants ranging from Thai to pizza and local Maldivian cuisine, fitness centres, tennis courts, shopping boutiques, opportunities to take Thai and international cooking classes. Activities on offer include deep sea fishing, sailing, yoga, kayaking, snorkelling, and swimming in either the sea or beachfront swimming pools.

Information & Facts

Language

Dhivehi is the national language in Maldives. English is widely spoken in addition to German, French, Italian and Japanese, spoken by the resort staff.

Money

The Maldivian Rufiya (MVR) is divided into 100 laari. The resorts in Maldives are generally expensive and travellers should ensure they bring sufficient funds. There are no cash machines and travellers' cheques are rarely used, but there are currency exchange facilities available at resorts and banks. Major credit cards are accepted at most resorts and hotels. US Dollars can be exchanged at the airport, banks or hotels. Guests staying at resorts can settle their accounts in hard foreign currency (US Dollars are best), credit cards or travellers cheques. Banks are usually closed on Fridays and Saturdays.
