Carrasco International Airport

The airport is situated 11 miles (18km) to the east of central Montevideo in the suburb of Carrasco.

Airport Taxis

Airport Taxi runs a metered service into Montevideo (Tel: +5982 604 0323).

Car Rental

Avis, Europcar and Hertz car rental companies are represented at the airport.

City Transfers

Buses and metered taxis run by various companies are available for the trip into Montevideo, which takes around half an hour. Commuters should have Uruguayan Pesos for the fare and some tickets can be bought prior to travel from the arrivals hall.

Departure Tax

An embarkation tax of US$31 is payable on international departures and a tax of US$17 to Buenos Aires.

Facilities

The airport, which is privately run, has recently undergone a major refurbishment with the building of a new terminal and substantial upgrade of existing facilities which include a duty free shop, a few coffee bars and cafeterias, a McDonald's, a branch of HSBC bank, and a currency exchange agency (cambio).

Language

The official language is Spanish.

Money

The official currency of Uruguay is the Uruguayan Peso (UYU), but US Dollars are also accepted by some tourist businesses, retailers and taxi drivers. The peso is divided into 100 centécimos. Currency can be exchanged at banks and Money Exchange Shops, which both offer similar exchange rates. Exchange rates tend to fluctuate frequently. There are plenty of ATMs available in shopping centres and attached to banks in commercial areas, but not all cards are accepted. Credit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club, are widely accepted by shops and restaurants. Travellers cheques are easiest to exchange if in US Dollars.
