An overview

Rugby World Cup 2019™ is coming to Asia for the very first time in 2019 and sports fans from all over the world will be given the opportunity to explore the unique country of Japan.

The opening match will take place at Tokyo Stadium in Chōfu on Friday the 20th of September.  The final will be held at International Stadium in Yokohama on Saturday the 2nd of November.  In between, fans will criss-cross Japan following their teams and discovering the many sides of this surprising country.

Ireland’s first pool games will be held in Yokahama, Fukuroi, Kobe and Fukuoka.  If they make it through to the next stage, our team could then take on South Africa in Tokyo.

If you’re going to be right there with them, you may be wondering what awaits you in Japan.

You’ll be delighted to hear that the weather should be good: not too hot and definitely not too cold.  With average temperatures ranging from 10 to 20oC, it should be ideal for playing and watching rugby.

Culture-wise, the country is an exciting mix of old and new. Japan has 21 World Heritage Sites, compared with Ireland’s two.  These sites include the spectacular Himeji Castle, the historic monuments of Kyoto and the religious shrines and temples of Nara.

In fact, the country is full of temples and shrines.  Japan’s two main religions are Shinto and Buddhism and there are 100,000 Shinto shrines and 80,000 Buddhist temples for you to visit.  Some of these are centuries old, many are architectural works of art and all are simply serene places to be.

Alongside these ancient monuments, there is modernity like we’ve never seen here in Ireland.  Tokyo in particular is a neon-lit city with a futuristic skyline where young people wear the strangest of fashions and are always the first to embrace the latest technologies.

The Japanese themselves are gentle and welcoming.  The country has one of the lowest crime rates in the world, which means you should feel safe everywhere you go.

Then there’s the food.  Japanese food is renowned for the quality of its ingredients, its unique cooking methods and the painstaking attention that is paid to its presentation.  From sushi and sashimi to noodle soups and tempura vegetables; you’ll miss it when you go home.

There are some tourist attractions that you mustn’t miss while you’re there.  Tokyo is a city unlike any other on earth.  It’s one of the most populated cities on the planet.  Ancient temples stand alongside glittering skyscrapers.  Shops stock fashions you won’t find elsewhere.

And that’s not all.  There’s a wonderful craft beer culture and you can sample some of the country’s finest brews while watching a sumo wrestling match or while singing karaoke, which just happens to be a favourite pastime of the Japanese.

Kyoto is another must-see.  Its historic centre is a testament to Japan’s past with shrines, temples, gardens and palaces everywhere you look.  Keep your eyes peeled and you may even spot some geishas, those doll-like women with white painted faces and elaborate costumes.

If you’re one of the Irish fans travelling to Rugby World Cup 2019™, Japan, you’re in for a very special experience.  Getting the opportunity to support the Irish team abroad is one thing.  Visiting Japan is another.  Together, they make for the absolute trip of a lifetime.
