Krasnaya Polyana
Set 1,968 feet (600m) above sea level, Krasnaya Polyana, meaning
'red meadow' is fast becoming the most popular ski resort in
Russia. Skiers and snowboarders here can enjoy the magnificent
panoramic view of the West Caucasus.
Located just 25 miles (40km) from Sochi and the Black Sea coast,
Krasnaya Polyana is sometimes called the 'Russian Courchevel" for
its well-groomed pistes, good après-ski nightlife, and high prices.
The resort owes much of its popularity to its excellent heliskiing
opportunities, however there are good runs for beginners.
The resort is currently undergoing massive construction and
renovations ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, as it will
host many events. Olympic facilities located in Krasnaya Polyana
include the Russian National Sliding Centre (luge bobsleigh and
skeleton), Psekhako Ridge (biathlon, cross-country skiing and
Nordic combined), Roza Khutor Alpine Resort (Alpine skiing and
snowboarding), Alpika Service Mountain Resort (freestyle skiing),
and Russian National Ski-jumping Centre (ski jumping and Nordic
Combined).
Information & Facts
Language
Russian is the official language. Some people speak
English, French or German.
Money
The official currency is the Rouble (RUB), which is divided into
100 kopeks. Most major credit cards, like Visa and Mastercard are
accepted in the larger hotels and at places that deal with foreign
tourists. Currency can be changed at banks, currency exchange
booths and hotels. Travellers cheques are difficult and expensive
to cash, but if necessary it is advised to take them in US Dollars
or Euro. ATMs are widely available in major cities. It is hard to
get rubles outside Russia and travellers are advised to take good
condition US dollars or Euro notes to change once there. It is
illegal to pay for goods or services in hard currency, though it is
often accepted.
