The Cotswolds

The Cotswolds region in England personifies country quaintness. With names like Chipping Campden, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold, the Cotswold towns and villages have a fairy-tale-like air, with small bridges over shallow rivers, colourful gardens leading up to thatched cottages and Morris-dancing in the town square. Here, life doesn't seem to change much over the centuries, and the inhabitants of its cottages and manors appear to retain a pastoral naivety. It's hard not to feel the rural tranquillity, and visitors may well feel as though they've stepped into one of Constable's paintings. Due to their proximity to Stratford-Upon-Avon and Oxford, Cotswold Bed-and-Breakfasts are a popular choice with tourists.

Information & Facts

Climate

The weather in the Cotswolds region is mild throughout the year but it does receive a large amount of rainfall. The warm Gulf Stream in the Atlantic Ocean passes by England's west coast moderating the weather and creating year-round constant temperatures. During the winter months from November to February, the average temperature is around 39F (4C), while during the summer months, from April to August, the average temperature reaches a pleasant 80F (26C).

Getting Around

Coach tours can be organised around the Cotswolds, and there are bus and rail links, but the best way to discover the region is to explore by car.

Language

English is the official language, though visitors will be astonished by the variety of regional accents.

Money

The currency is the pound (GBP), which is divided into 100 pence. ATMs are available in all towns and Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely accepted; visitors with other cards should check with their credit card companies in advance. Foreign currency can be exchanged at bureaux de change and large hotels, however better exchange rates are likely to be found at banks. Travellers cheques are accepted in all areas frequented by tourists; they are best taken in Pounds Sterling to avoid additional charges.

Time

Local time in the United Kingdom is GMT (GMT +1 from last Sunday in March to Saturday before last Sunday in October).
