Winnipeg

The capital of Manitoba and its largest city, Winnipeg is a friendly, laid-back place, with a schizophrenic climate and limited, though well-supported, tourist attractions. Although more a popular destination for people coming to live and work in Canada for extended periods of time (it is, by all accounts, a great city in which to raise a family), Winnipeg does still have its charms for the short-term visitor. These include the historic area known as The Forks - the site of confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers, attracting more than four million visitors a year; Lake Winnipeg, the sixth-largest freshwater lake in Canada; the Assiniboine urban forest, and the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden. Culturally, the city is home to an array of art galleries and museums, and has a strong film industry, having played host to numerous Hollywood productions over the years. The city is also home to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, one of Canada's most celebrated companies, and the Winnipeg Jazz Festival. With temperatures ranging from -22ºF (-30ºC) in mid-winter, to 86ºF (30ºC) in mid-summer, visitors are strongly advised to time their visit to Winnipeg to coincide with the warmer months (between May and August).

Information & Facts

Language

The official languages are English and French (predominantly in Quebec).

Money

The currency used is the Canadian Dollar (CAD), which is divided into 100 cents. One-dollar coins are also known as loonies (due to the picture of a loon, a type of bird, on the coin), and two-dollar coins as toonies. Banks and bureaux de change will change money and travellers cheques, as will some hotels, but the rate will not be as good. Major credit cards are widely accepted and ATMs are plentiful. US Dollars are largely accepted, though due to fraud, larger notes might not be and change is usually given in Canadian dollars.

Time

Canada covers six time zones, from GMT 8 in the west to GMT -3.5 in the east.
