Charlotte
Charlotte, commonly referred to as the "Queen City" of North
Carolina, is a destination that's been the benefactor of a royal
facelift of late. As the largest metropolis in the state, this once
sleepy, sprawling suburbia has sat back with true Southern patience
and watched as a massive reconstruction and unprecedented expansion
has unrolled at her feet.
The result is a city that's vying for the attention of local and
international tourists alike. As the midpoint between the
Appalachian Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Charlotte enjoys a
temperate climate and plays host to rolling green hills that give
visitors plenty of opportunity to take advantage of the great
outdoors nearly all year long.
The centre of Charlotte is divided into many districts, each
with their own personality. Uptown is home to many museums,
restaurants, theatres and nightclubs in between high-rise Fortune
500 company buildings; North Davidson Street (known as NoDa) is
eclectic and artistic and home to funky restaurants, shops, and art
galleries; and South End is a gentrified mill district with hip,
upmarket entertainment and attractions. The 'old money' mansions of
Myers Park are worth a drive to see, while University City is home
to student-focused like and a few shopping malls.
Plenty of parkland and pedestrian thoroughfares cater to those
who prefer a bit of leg-work, while an extensive array of shopping
and dining options are sure to satisfy those that prefer to
exercise their wallets. The refurbished urban core of Charlotte's
city centre has created a well nourished nightlife network, and
even peripheral neighbourhoods are alive with plenty to do and
see.
Charlotte's not-to-be-missed cultural, entertainment, sporting,
and historical mainstays make it a great destination for families,
young professionals, and pensioners around.
